The Gospel of the Blues: A concert featuring Francine Reed and Friends
Local blues artists perform at a concert to benefit Epworth United Methodist Church in Candler Park.
For one night only, you can enjoy a concert that will begin with some gospel music that will encourage audience participation, and then roll into the blues that blues legend Francine Reed is famous for. Ms. Reed will be joined by her friends Lola Gulley, Sandra Hall and The Shadows. The Potluck Mass Choir will also make an appearance. All proceeds go toward Epworth’s handicap ramp project.
The concert will be Friday, January 25, 2013, at 7pm in the Sanctuary of Epworth United Methodist Church located at 1561 McLendon Ave. NE Atlanta, GA 30307. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Children 14 and under are $12, with a maximum of two (additional children in immediate family are free).
Ms. Reed grew up singing gospel music. “I can still remember my first performance when I was a three-year-old in my aunt’s church. Her name was Helen Francis, for whom I’m named, and I was so small they had to put me on the piano. I used to listen to rehearsals with her gospel choir and I’d sing ‘I Wanna See Jesus’ in front of the congregation.”
Ms. Reed has appeared with many artists, including Miles Davis, Smokey Robinson, Etta James, and Lyle Lovett, and been invited to the White House to sing. Ms. Reed lives in Atlanta and frequently performs at Blind Willie’s in Virginia-Highlands.

The Christmas season begins early at Clifton. From mid November through New Year’s day we and our guests are blessed by the many churches and individuals who support our ministry. From special meals to gifts for our guests our volunteers and supporters go the extra mile to make the Christmas season special for the men who call Clifton home. But the best of our traditions are those when the men of Clifton take time to give back to the community that makes Clifton possible.
Everyone is invited to join with the men of Clifton for three special nights of Caroling on Wednesday, December 12th through Friday the 14th. We will meet at 7:30 each evening. Hot chocolate, apple cider, cookies and other refreshments will be served afterwards. No experience or talent is necessary; all are welcome. On Sunday, December 16th our guests will present their Annual Christmas Program at 3:00 PM. This is a very special look at the meaning of Christmas through the eyes of our guests. After the program everyone is invited to join with our guests for dinner.

Our Annual Dinner & Graduation Celebration is a little more than a month away. This year we will gather on Sunday the 30th of September at North Avenue Presbyterian Church. The festivities will begin at 6PM but plan to arrive early to spend time with our supporters, fellow volunteers, our current guests and of course the graduates. Use the links below to make your reservations online.
In addition to an evening of fellowship you will hear about the accomplishments of the past year and our plans for the future. The personal stories of our recent graduates will be the highlight of the evening. In addition our staff and officers will use the opportunity to recognize those individuals and churches that have made a special impact on the ministry in the past year.
Time is short and seating is limited, so make your reservation today. Can’t fit the dinner into your schedule, make a donation that will allow a guest to attend.
Tickets for the dinner are $40 per person or $325 for a table of 8. They can be purchased on our web site http://www.cliftonsanctuary.com or by sending a check to the Clifton office. Reservations are required. North Avenue Presbyterian is located at 607 Peachtree Street, at the corner of North Avenue & Peachtree, in Atlanta.

Before moving into the New Year we should take a moment to thank all those who have helped to make Christmas at Clifton a truly special experience. Our staff, volunteers and even the guests put an extra effort into sharing the love that the Christmas season brings with it. This spirit pervades Clifton throughout the year and makes it the special place that it is.
John & Cindy McConnell spend the night at Clifton each Christmas Eve so they assume their alternate personalities of Santa and Mrs. Claus. They are wonderful volunteers throughout the year, but we (and the guys!) appreciate their hospitality during Christmas.

The men of Clifton were showered this year with lots of gifts provided by our wonderful volunteers. The members of Oakhurst Presbyterian made gift boxes for each guest. The Mariner’s Sunday School class at Peachtree Presbyterian made their annual gift of a wonderful new pair of sneakers for each of the men. Then they are the many individuals who dropped off items needed to fill a gift bag for each of our guests. They are just too many of you to name.
Speaking of the gift bags let’s not forget our own Alice who together with her husband Bob, Graylin and Mia Covington spent hour on Christmas Eve packing those bags for each guest. On Christmas morning our guests were served delicious breakfast of eggs, sausage, grits and biscuits prepared by our chef Peter.
